Pakistan sought a new IMF rescue package yesterday, while the US encouraged it to broaden and prioritize economic reforms.

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated, “Pakistan has made progress to stabilize its economy, and we support its efforts to manage its daunting debt burden.”

Our advice to the government is to focus and broaden economic reforms to address its economic issues. We will continue to engage with Pakistan through technical agreements, trade, and investment, all of which are priorities of our bilateral relationship, to assist its economic development.

Miller said of Indian defense minister’s remarks: “The United States is not going to get in the middle of this, but we do encourage both India and Pakistan to avoid escalation and find a resolution through dialogue.”
