Opposition parties in KP fight for seats designated for minorities.

The JUI was granted a reserved seat in the province assembly for minorities, a decision that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has contested in the Peshawar High Court.

A high court appeal has been filed requesting that the JUI and PML-N each hold seven general seats in the legislature. “When two parties have an equal number of seats, the minority seats are given to the party that wins the toss,” the petitioner stated.

“The election commission awarded the JUI the reserved seat without holding a vote to settle the dispute.”

In an attempt to determine who will get the minority reserved seat, the petitioner has asked the court to declare the electoral commission’s decision null and void.

Previously, the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), the dominant party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, filed a case for reserved seats in legislatures, but the Peshawar High Court (PHC) rejected it.

On the petition, the high court’s five-member bench reached a unanimous ruling.

In his request on behalf of the SIC for reserved seats in legislatures, Barrister Ali Zafar said that the electoral commission had set the party aside and given reserved seats to the other political parties.
