Next month on April 2, there will be a general election for 48 Senate seats.
The Pakistani Election Commission reports that fifty-two senators will retire tomorrow after serving their full six-year terms. Elections will not be held, nonetheless, for the four seats that were previously designated for the tribal territories. Following the integration of tribal regions into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a result of the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, these seats were eliminated.
Seven general seats, two for women and two for technocrats/ulema from each of the provinces of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Sindh will be up for election. One representative from each of the two non-Muslim seats will come from Sindh and Punjab.
The Islamabad Capital Territory will elect two senators, one for each of the general as well as technocrat/Ulema category.
The provincial elections commissioners of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan, as well as the Election Commission Secretariat in Islamabad, are the places to access documents pertaining to the Senate elections.
On Friday and Saturday, candidates can put in their nomination documents to the appropriate Returning Officer.
